When I was growing up in the ~~70's~~ olden days there was a certain order to things. The sun rose in the east, set in the west, and children did not call adults by their first names. Call me old fashioned, but a playmate of my daughter repeatedly referred to me by my first name in conversation today and I was uncomfortable with it. I felt that a first name is reserved for peers. At the same time, I've never instructed my own children to call other moms by salutation and surname. Next time, I think I'll ask the other parent what they prefer to be called. Feel free to let me know what you think.

How to Make a Strawberry Cake By A Newly Domesticated Mom

I'm a stay-at-home-mompreneur. I wasn't always at home, but now I am. I was not domestically inclined. I used to cook steak by baking it on a cookie sheet and once tried to make chicken l'orange by plopping a can of frozen orange juice onto some chicken and microwaving it until the plastic container (yes, plastic, I said I couldn't cook) warped.

Thankfully, through trial and error, I have since learned to cook. Recently, one of my daughters requested a strawberry shaped, strawberry flavoured pink cake for her birthday. Unable to find a strawberry cake mix in the grocery store, I "hacked" a recipe. It turned out not too bad, looked okay and tasted fine, except the frosting had crunchy bits in it. My daughter thought it was beautiful and she didn't mind crunchy cake frosting.

Here's the recipe, feel free to use it or edit it as you so desire:
2 white cake mixes in a box
4 teaspoons red cake decorating sprinkles
2 packets of strawberry flavoured drink mix
(I used Crystal Light, but I'm sure KoolAid would be fine, I just couldn't find it in strawberry flavour)
2 canisters of ready-made buttercream cake frosting
1 box of food colouring, I used the variety pack which includes blue, yellow, green and red.

1)Add 4 teaspoons of sprinkles and 2 packets of drink mix to the dry cake mix and complete according to the baking instructions on the box. I made one rectangular cake per box of mix.
2)After the cakes cool turn one cake upside down so the flat bottom is now the top. Spread some pre-made frosting over the top of this cake. You can make your own frosting from scratch if you want. Place the second cake on top.
3)On a sheet of paper draw an outline of a strawberry shape and cut it out. Place it on the cake and cut around it. You can also get really Michaelangelo about it and carve off the edges to give it a more realistic shape.
4) Put some of the frosting into a separate bowl. Add the red sprinkles to the frosting and the red food colouring a few drops at a time and stir it. Keep adding sprinkles and food colouring until you get the desired colour or until you run out of sprinkles and food colouring, like I did.

I also mixed up a separate batch of frosting and coloured it green to use as the strawberry's stem. This required the entire bottle of green food colour plus entire bottles of blue and yellow (blue plus yellow makes green - yay Bachelor of Fine Arts degree) respectively.

5) Apply a thin layer of frosting to all sides of the cake with a butter knife. This is your scratch coat, to borrow a masonry term, and it will prevent crumbs from messing up your final layer of frosting and covers up the colour of the cake.
6) Apply the final layer of frosting to the cake either with a butter knife or use one of those cake decorating kits with the bags and different tips. I had one in the house already so I used the squirt-little-rosebud-dots-all-over technique.

Voila. I am including some photos so you can all ~~laugh at me~~ take a look at the result.

Have Kids? You Need To Know About The CPSIA!

It's going to be a very interesting and challenging year in the baby business world. Not only are we in the midst of a global recession, but I would like to point out a piece of legislation coming into effect soon in the United States that is sure to affect us here in Canada very shortly.

Do you have kids? Purchase anything that kids may use? This affects you. Perhaps you have heard of the Consumer Product Safety Improvement Act. It was passed in an effort to protect children from lead contaminated products, which I think is certainly an admirable goal. However, what many people are slowly coming to realize is that it may actually cause the obliteration of many small businesses in the United States that manufacture handcrafted goods for children. It's complicated and time consuming to track down what the legislation says and who will be affected and how.

For example, a kids tshirt that is sewn in small batches, every piece of fabric (and each colour of the same fabric), applique, ink, button, zipper, rhinestone, etc, will need to be tested in a third party lab for lead. This has to be done for each different size of the same design of tshirt, even if made from the same batch of fabric. The manufacturer (often moms at home!) has to supply certificates to the retailers or the product is considered unsellable, hazardous waste, unable to be even given away. Some manufacturers who have posted online about their experience have inquired at labs as to what this would cost, and it can add up to tens of thousands of dollars. All this to be allowed to sell a $20.00 tshirt.

Just in time for holiday shopping we have received our new En Gry & Sif items. Most are toys, but I've picked up a couple of items for moms, too. En Gry & Sif are two Danish ladies, Gry and Sif, who started a factory in Nepal employing the local crafters. They take great care with the environment and their employees, and are proud to support the UN Global Compact program for social responsibility. Read more on their site.

Parents of toddlers are used to the drill: bedtime means reading the same books, over and over...one wishes that the quality of these books was a little higher.
Every night I (or my spouse) read to our 3 year old daughter as part of the bedtime routine. Frequently we find ourselves reading the same repetitive, inane stories over and over until our brains feel like they are turning to mush. Below find my critique of several series that we have been forced to read.

Series Name: The Berenstain Bears
Number of Times Read In Our House: Approx. 5,000
The great thing about Berenstain Bears books is every page has 7 or 8 paragraphs of description, which flows really smoothly when you're reading it aloud to a toddler for the fifth time. Hey, Stan and Jan Berenstain, a little tip: try having your characters do something or say something. If you ever have to read one of your books out loud, you'll thank me for it.Another tip: the use of "had had" should be avoided. ("Mother Bear had had enough of the Brother's and Sister's behaviour.") If you find yourself using this phrase "had had" you should rewrite your sentence. If you find "had had" in your book on the bookshelf, you should hire a new editor.

How I Find Products For My Store

Big company stores have salaried merchandise buyers who live glamorous lives shopping with someone else's money; alas, I am a one-woman show here in independent retailer land. Still, I do receive more than my fair share of inquiries from people starting their own store or business students wanting to know where I get the products you see in my store.

For the most part, I buy what I would like for my kids. I like to think I have good taste. This method hasn't always worked out the way I planned, but I have been improving my instincts over the years. I've learned that just because I like a product it doesn't necessarily mean anyone else will, and sometimes I'm the one who thinks "leggings for babies? who would want those?" Evidently, everybody wants those.

The best one-stop-shopping way to locate and contact new suppliers is to walk the trade shows. Industry trade shows are preferable, but you can still find a lot of new niche items at consumer (read: open to the public) trade shows. In order to get admitted to an industry-only show you'll have to prove that you are a retailer and not just obsessed with finding out how much wholesale prices are. This means you'll need a provincial resale permit, called a "vendor's permit" here in Ontario.

Since I live in the GTA (Greater Toronto Area) I am fortunate that there are a lot of big shows all year long. My favourite is the Canadian Gift and Tableware Association trade show. It is an absolutely ginormous show and lasts for 5 days, twice a year. Wear comfortable shoes and carry some water with you. And GPS might come in handy.

I've also attended the Canadian Toy Association show which is a much more manageable size. It's just way too much fun attending the toy show. I'm a kid in a candy store, so to speak! Usually, there are the Toronto International Gift Fair and the By Hand shows on at the same time in adjacent buildings. These are also great places to locate new, unique products, especially that little gem of an item that nobody knows about - yet.

Another great resource is all around us. Media like newspapers, television, and magazines contain a plethora of lifestyle, parenting, and trend articles. It's probably where you first heard about the spate of toy recalls last year and the bisphenol-A controversy this year. Use this information to intuit what products people might want next.

Not to point out the glaringly obvious, but the internet is also a very, very good research tool. There are baby product review blogs where you can read about other peoples' hands on experiences and see their opinions. Shopping directories sometimes have posted customer reviews. People want to buy what they see celebrities buy for their kids. Want to know what brand of socks Suri Cruise is wearing? The internet knows.

Many distributors or manufacturers will have sales reps representing their product lines. These professional sales people are very good at finding and contacting retailers that may be interested those product lines. I hold the controversial viewpoint that not all sales reps are evil. Sure, they want retailers to purchase products, that's their job. But don't immediately assume that they are out to stick you with a case of unsellable product. That won't serve either parties long term interests. They have their ear to the ground and often know what the next big thing will be before I do. A good rep will remember what the focus of my store is and can make me aware of an item that could do very well for me.

Lastly, I don't find new products - they find me, or rather, my email address. I receive way too much email. About one or three a day are from small to large scale manufacturers, distributors, or talented moms suggesting their products for inclusion in Blue Blankie. Sometimes I can tell they haven't seen my web store or they'd be aware of the oddness of their suggestions. (Menswear from India?) But most are really thoughtful, sincere emails with a great back story. And since ultimately, I can't carry everything I see, those are the hardest offers to refuse.

2. Industry Sites

Try Consumer Reports website, www.consumerreports.org, for general product safety information. As a mom of young children with toys all over the house I've been talking to my mom friends about all the toy recalls in the news lately, and we've often said "Wouldn't it be great if we could find out for ourselves if there's lead in these toys?" Well, wouldn't you know it, there is! I came across this website for a company that makes a handy-dandy Portable Handheld Niton XRF analyzer, which, basically, is this thing that looks like an elaborate squirt gun that you can take around your house and point it at all your toys and it will test them for lead. I couldn't see how much this tester costs on their website, but if any of my customers do look into it please let me know. The company is called Thermo Scientific.

As a mompreneur myself, I get emails daily from other moms researching their business ideas. There are a lot of really good ideas coming from moms who’ve spent years in amazing careers and who bring that same passion for work to their new business ventures.

I launched an online boutique, www.blueblankie.com, in February 2005 and now design my own brand of blankets. I saw an opportunity for a home-based business and a more flexible schedule. After maternity leave, I returned to my full time job. I continued to grow my business by working on the online store in the evenings and on weekends. Eventually, I was able to stay home with my two toddlers and further develop my fledgling business.

The big lure of starting a home business is the flexible schedule, which theoretically allows you to get work done and spend quality time with your children. However, when working from home with kids around, it really means that your own flexibility is taken to a whole new level. You’ll find yourself hiding in another room in order to take a business call because your toddler has chosen that moment to announce, loudly, “I ate my booger, Mommy!” Loads of laundry are processed between meetings and articles are written while food cooks. Research is interrupted by refereeing sibling boxing matches.

Owning a small business usually means that you are doing it all yourself. You are the CEO, the bookkeeper, the sales, marketing and customer service departments. Wearing so many hats can seem daunting at first, but no more so than the nervousness one feels when becoming a parent for the first time. In the same way as you develop a routine with your new baby, you can develop a routine with your business tasks.

Motherhood is actually perfect previous experience for being a mompreneur. I’ve heard people say that raising kids is like herding cats and that moms need to be able to do ten things at once. Moms are already familiar with multi-tasking as an extreme sport. If anyone can find a balance between running a household, care giving, operating a business, and knowing that brown is the new black, it’s a mom.
